We define a target audience by there gender, age, hobbies and interests and what country there from. This is important because we understand what the target audience would enjoy seeing. It is useful to have a target audience because thats the group of audience that more likely going to watch the film. The genre that males enjoy is action while females enjoy chick flicks. Children are more likely going to enjoy animation. The usefulness of a target audience survey is that they can get feedback on what the audience enjoyed and what they did not enjoy and can also get a better understanding.
