How Can A Film Opening Attract An Audience- Research Blog 4

Watching Documentary
1) What does Thomas Sutcliffe mean when he says ' Films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment. while there are many types of seduction, the temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irresistible'

By this he means, if you don't show any reason to watch the film no one will watch it. Films need to grab the audience's attention and not let go.

2)according to Director Jean Jacques Beineix, what are the risks of 'instant arousal'

Instant arousal make the audience expect too much from the film, this is bad because if the film doesn't live up to the standard set people will give bad reviews and there wont be as many people watching it.

3) explain why 'a good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn't know nearly enough yet, and at the same time make sure that it doesn't know too little'

If the audience know too much there isn't anything left to show and if there isn't enough them there's no temptation to watch it. By making a good beginning the audience start to think more about the film and start to question it. All of this entices the audience more and makes them carry on watching.

4) what does critic Stanley Kaufman describe as the classic opening? why does this work?

5)why is Kyle Cooper's title sequence to the film Seven so effective?
