3: What is the purpose of a title sequence and film operning

In a film's opening title sequence, we expect to see the directors, screenplay and producers name first before seeing the title, crew and actors. There is usually music or background noises being played while the credits are on and then will be replaced by the dialogue and the film. The openings are either blank, animated or have part of the film as a background.

In Mad Max, it is blank with a soundtrack and the credits are being show formally. The title is usually shown first for this movie. After the credits there is a narrator talking about the story with background scenes and the main character was in view. The background scenes showed violence and destruction to help the audience understand the setting more.

In Captain America, the opening was animated with the characters being produced with a picture of themselves.  In the rest of the credits it was associated with themes of the movie. The order of credits went as director, screenplay, producers, crew and actors. The music was classic heroic music that linked with the film to make the audience more engaged with the film. The music was synchronised with the animation to make a more engaging effect for the audiance.
In 22 Jump Street we see the characters first before going into the credits. In the credits we see various poster of the characters and cutscenes of them. We see the directors name first before seeing the screen play writer, the story writer and then the producer. After that we see the execs, director of photography, production designer, editor and then the actors. The music is used well with the credits because it makes the audience want to keep watching the credits.

Fast And Furious

My favourite film or films are the Fast and Furious series and I have chosen to analyse Fast and Furious 6. The film uses a bold serif font for the credits and has a song played throughout with some sound from the film to add to the tension and opening. The film is classified as an action thriller.

The credits move across the screen quickly to show the resemblance of fast cars. Sound effects and fast match cuts are used to build on tension before the film even begins. The order of the title credits are as followed:

What Conclusions Can You Make About The Titles Used in Title Sequences

Title sequence ordering.
All titles follow a similar order in title sequences. The order is normally starting with the director first, the screenplay producers, followed by the co-producer, then the director of photography, designer, editor, actors, casting, costume, music and the companies name of the film appearing before or after the credits. this is the generic conventional way for a title sequence to be and has been for many years. Each credit lasts 2-3 seconds giving enough time to read them. The font of the writing depends on what the film is as it is an important factor that contributes to the rest of the film, for example in the film Se7en, the credits are written, this is because in the film the an is a serial killer who keeps a journal, therefore by the credits being written it gives insight into the film before it even starts. Title sequences have become an art.

What Do We Expect To See In A Film's Opening Sequence-research blog 7

In a film's opening title sequence, we expect to see, the company name then the director then the screenplay and producer, producers names, once this is shown then the actors and crews names are shown. There is usually music playing in the background while the credits are shown then this will be replaced by dialogue leading into the film. The openings are either blank animated or part of the film.

In The cabin in the woods, the company name is shown first(LIONSGATE) in serif format with a still image of blood red clouds in the background, then we are shown blood pouring with moving images inside the blood with people being killed. Then the producers names are shown, then the distributor, then we are brought into the film with charterers exchanging dialogue then the film name popping up suddenly in bold capitals with a scream in the background, after this the actors names are shown as they pop up and the crews names, then the D.O.P's names, executive producers names and who it is produced by and written by and lastly the directors name. All credits were shown in blood to show danger.

2: prelim evaluation

  • I feel that i have improved with my editing skills and feel that i did a good job with the editing.
  •  Some of our match cuts work really well but we did break the 180 degree rule once during the filming.
  • I we had to do the project again i would make sure that we did more shots and improve on the continuity of shots and film in a larger room.
  • Make sure that the story board is detailed and that it all makes sence.
  • We were succesful in showing someone walk and open a door, we could improve in the 180 degree rule but did well with the limited space to film with. We did good with the match shots and experemented with the reverse shot.

  • Use of computer graphics and animation  makes the opening sequence interesting
  • The company identity/title important
  • Title sequence has become a short film in itself
  • Use elaborate designs to grab audience attention
  • Use of tv screen as a vehicle for watching demanded news of titles
  • Titles have become a part of the cinematic space
  • Titles at start to avoid contract violation

Analyse 2 Film Sequences blog 6

Se7en

The titles in se7en follow a strict conventional order of titles in thriller films. It is made obvious that it is  a thriller film by the use of several things such as the way the titles come on and off of screen. Throughout the sequence you see no ones face but see one person writing into a book. This is an indicator that they are a  main character. The themes of violence begin to come through the sequence as it goes along.

The opening sequence of collateral has no titles. However it is fairly obvious of the genre and also who is the good guy and who is the bad guy. Throughout the sequence the bad guy is shown in slow motion. This makes it obvious that he is bad. The good guy is shown in normal pace and shows he is good.

What Makes A Good Title Sequence According To Kyle Cooper? Research Blog 5

What Makes A Good Title Sequence
  • Kyle Cooper is accredited as the man who single handedly revitalised the main title sequence as an art form.
  • His 1995 title sequence for Seven was hailed by the New York's Times magazine as one of the most important design innovations of the 1990's.
  • He thinks that the fact that a title sequence dovetails seamlessly into the film properly is important. He also believes that a great title sequence sets an expectation for the rest of the film, he says 'it makes you forget everything else and makes you just want to be there'.
  •  In the film Seven the font is important as it portrays the character, the character in Seven is a serial killer who keeps a journal and this is linked with the title sequence being hand written.
  •  He likes the title sequence in Dead-zone because of the simple typography ad simple music.
  • For To Kill A Mocking Bird, he says he likes it because of the photography, horizontal line contrast, the marbles distorting the background and it encapsulates a characters obsession.
  • By the term 'story based' he means a back story and clear metaphor.

How Can A Film Opening Attract An Audience- Research Blog 4

Watching Documentary
1) What does Thomas Sutcliffe mean when he says ' Films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment. while there are many types of seduction, the temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irresistible'

By this he means, if you don't show any reason to watch the film no one will watch it. Films need to grab the audience's attention and not let go.

2)according to Director Jean Jacques Beineix, what are the risks of 'instant arousal'

Instant arousal make the audience expect too much from the film, this is bad because if the film doesn't live up to the standard set people will give bad reviews and there wont be as many people watching it.

3) explain why 'a good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn't know nearly enough yet, and at the same time make sure that it doesn't know too little'

If the audience know too much there isn't anything left to show and if there isn't enough them there's no temptation to watch it. By making a good beginning the audience start to think more about the film and start to question it. All of this entices the audience more and makes them carry on watching.

4) what does critic Stanley Kaufman describe as the classic opening? why does this work?

5)why is Kyle Cooper's title sequence to the film Seven so effective?

What Is The Purpose Of A Title Sequence And Film Opening - Blog 3

The Film Before The Film

What I have learnt about title sequences and film opening are that they have changed a lot throughout the years, they are also known as the 'Film Before The Film'. Thomas Edison was the first person to use a title sequence at the beginning of a film in 1987 by using a text board to show the companies name and for copyright reason. The development of sound also changed and was more important in films. Actors started to become credited at the beginning of films and title sequences were used as a gate keeping function. The invention of TV led to people staying at home more instead of going to the cinema which made film developers reinvent the film medium. Film makers and designers produced elaborately designed film opening, they did this to grab the audiences attention before the film had started and by the 1950's these sequences became mini films in themselves, explaining the name the 'Film Before The Film'.Saul Bass was a title designer renowned for pioneering innovation in title design, at the same time Pablo Ferro and Maurice Binder also started their careers and for many years they set the standard for film title design. New technological development produced a 'new era' of opening titles. The first film with a digitally generated opening title sequence was superman in 1978. This opening sequence fascinated the audience because it was multi dimensional and  physically impossible in the 1980' computers with graphic interface became available and in the 1990's the user friendly software 'After Effects' was used to develop opening title sequences. the digital technology revolution allowed the fusion of old trends with new technology.
